Pulse Performance Products introduced the first three-wheel electric scooter that’s designed for young children.

The Pulse Safe Start ($80) is designed for children as young as age 3 and accommodates users who weigh up to 50 pounds. The scooter reaches a maximum speed of 1.75 mph and can operate for up to 40 minutes when the battery is fully charged. The 6-volt battery takes 8 hours to charge fully.

Children control the speed by using a push-button throttle. The scooter can be operated manually if the battery runs out, but it delivers a slight resistance when you push it, Pulse spokesperson Kassandra O’Brien tells Consumers Digest.

The scooter has two front wheels and a large deck that makes it easier for young children to maintain their balance than does a two-wheel scooter that has a narrow deck, Pulse says. The Pulse Safe Start’s deck is 3 inches off the ground and measures 9 inches wide and 16 inches long.

The Pulse Safe Start is available at Toys R Us. Academy Sports + Outdoors, Kmart, Meijer, Target and Wal-Mart Stores will begin to sell the scooters Sept. 15, 2014, O’Brien says.
